Megalopoles

Here's a factoid from the site of the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit currently underway in New York, NY: In 2006 the combined population of the world’s eight largest cities — Seoul, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Jakarta, Moscow, Istanbul and Mexico City — was just under 75 million people.

As a point of comparison, that's roughly double the population of California.

and that's just the core cities; if you count the population of the total urban area for those cities, it's a much bigger figure. for figures, see: http://www.citymayors.com/statistics/urban_2006_1.html
