Yesterday I highlighted the growing hazards of mountaineering in the Himalayas, as reported by the BBC, but of course the problem extends far beyond the South Asia, as this Reuters item on the crumbling Alps makes clear. In the Alps, much of the rock is loosely consolidated and held together to a large extent by permafrost. Warming temperatures weaken the bond, resulting in considerable rockfall.
