Coal Notes
- You may be aware that the US gets more than 50 percent of its electricity from coal, but did you know that, in China, the figure is more than 70 percent?
- According to Robert Socolow, the Princeton professor known for co-developing the so-called stabilization wedges made famous in Al Gore's film, it's estimated that carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) may have to be implemented at more than 1,600 coal plants by 2050 -- a third more than the world's total coal power capacity now.
- Projects are on the drawing board, but at the moment, not a single large coal-burning facility is equipped to capture and bury carbon anywhere in the world.
