Clean Energy Solutions
Vision
- Energy sector reform: Support policies that encourage clean energy solutions and discourage carbon-intensive energy generation and waste.
- Implement national energy performance upgrades: Reduce carbon-based energy demand in new homes and buildings 100 percent and in existing buildings 50 percent by 2030.
- Lead renewable energy revolution: Push for energy infrastructure that generates most of the nation's power from renewable energy by 2040 (and at least 25 percent by 2025).
Early Campaign Achievements
- 28 states have passed Renewable Electricity Standard law. No one has fought in more states than the Sierra Club.
- The Sierra Club and allies successfully achieved adoption of a stronger model energy code for residential buildings.
- The Sierra Club is given leadership appointments on key California and Western stakeholder committees with mission to develop responsibly-sited renewable energy plans.
- The Sierra Club pushed for and won improvements in international conservation codes in small to mid-rise commercial and residential buildings, resulting in an up-to-15 percent improvement in new construction and many renovations.
- The Sierra Club, along with California Attorney General Jerry Brown, brought and settled a suit was against the City of Stockton, setting a breathtaking new standard that every new residential and commercial building will be far more efficient than even California's codes require--the equivalent of LEEDS certification. The City of Stockton further agreed to make new development transit-friendly.
- Thanks to legislation supported by the Sierra Club, every home in Hawai'i includes a solar water heater, reducing home electricity bills by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by 12,000 metric tons each year.
