Vision

  1. U.S. Carbon Limit: Establish a U.S. economy-wide cap on carbon emissions that contributes to reducing carbon emissions at least 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 from 2005 levels and ameliorates impacts on people and the natural environment in a fair and just way.
  2. International Leadership: U.S. leadership in the creation and U.S. enactment of an international agreement that prevents atmospheric CO2 from reaching 450 ppm, ultimately returning to 350 ppm.

Early Campaign Achievements

In June 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act to reduce US dependence on oil, invest in clean energy technologies, and reduce carbon emissions.

The Sierra Club is campaigning to set an ambitious, science-based federal limit on our country's greenhouse gas emissions, reducing them at least 20% from 2005 levels by 2020, and at least 80% by 2050.
