Winter Internship

Description:   Assist Sierra Club staff and volunteers in the Metro DC Challenge to Sprawl campaign.  The campaign is aimed at building a network of livable communities connected by public transportation in the Washington, DC region.  Interns will work closely with the Sierra Club organizer to plan and carry out community outreach activities, recruit new volunteers, conduct grassroots awareness campaigns, organize turn-out for public meetings, and maintain organized records.

Duration:  One semester commitment; 15-20 hours per week; occasional weekend and evening activities.

Salary:  Exceptional candidates may qualify for a stipend.  College credit available.

Skills:  General knowledge of and interest in environmental protection, sprawl and transportation issues.  Skilled in word processing, database management, and using the internet.  Ability to write and speak clearly.  Organized self-starter.  Motivated and willing to follow through on commitments.

Duties May Include:

  1. Provide organizing assistance in campaigns, including phone banking, letter writing, community meetings, and canvassing.
  2. Outreach to local schools and student organizations.
  3. Research issues relevant to specific campaigns.
  4. Help develop outreach materials and publications.
  5. Assist in media work.
  6. Administrative tasks, including word processing, mailings, and filing.

Background:  The Sierra Club's Mid-Atlantic Office includes one full-time conservation organizer who works with volunteers in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland to fight regional sprawl.  The office is accessible by Metrorail (orange line, Ballston) and Metrobus (route 10B, 23A, 23C, 4A, 4B and ART 41).
