Washington, DC

Sierra Club advocates for a stronger public transportation system by ensuring that Metro is responsive and accountable to the public and adequately funded so that the system can purchase new buses and rail cars to keep up with continuing growth in ridership. DC residents would also benefit by an expanded Metro system – including streetcar lines in D.C. and the Purple Line, a new Metrorail line that would circle the city – so that it serves more communities.

We continue to promote better information about Metrobus routes so that more people will be aware of how the system may serve them. And we advocate for streets that are safer for pedestrians and bicyclists – two non-polluting means of transportation.

Streetcars for DC
With all the benefits that streetcars offer—support for local businesses, more manageable commutes, connections between neighborhoods divided by freeways or rivers, and decreases in the tailpipe pollution that causes asthma and global warming—we can’t afford to wait years for action.

11th Street Bridge Replacement
The proposal to expand the 11th Street Bridge threatens to destroy parkland and dump thousands of cars and trucks on neighborhood streets. DC residents deserve better.
