Stop Beltway Widening

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Flour Daniel Company want to widen the Beltway with four new "HOT lanes," High-Occupancy/Toll lanes that charge single-occupant vehicles but allow carpools and buses for free. But adding more lanes to the beltway will not solve congestion, as pent up demand will clog the "free" lanes. A wider beltway would also encroach on local neighborhoods, increase sprawl development, and further degrade our region's air.

Our transportation system is out of balance. When we're making decisions about where to invest next, we should look for solutions that provide more choices and better connect our communities and neighborhoods. Building the Purple Line would be a great first step: rail that connects the existing spokes of the Metro system. Click here to learn more.
