Doing the Laundry

Universal tasks such as doing the laundry, repeated by millions of people, offer enormous opportunities for making simple changes that will have big effects over time. Help the environment while washing your clothes!

  • Try to wash only full loads in your washing machine. If you must wash a smaller load, adjust the amount of detergent accordingly. Using too much detergent is actually less effective for washing.

  • Use a phosphate-free detergent. Check the box labels or simply use a liquid detergent (all liquid detergents are phosphate free).

  • You can reduce the amount of detergent (and increase its effectiveness) by adding a half cup of baking soda or borax.

  • Rather than use toxic bleaches, you can brighten whites by letting them hang in the sun before laundering. For tough spots, dab on a little lemon juice first.

  • You can use 1/2 C of vinegar in the rinse cycle as a natural fabric softener.
