A necklace of Words for Wilderness Around the World - has arrived at Yellowstone!

The idea of a necklace of words around the world grew from the work of Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park in New York City, many parks across America, and wrote the Preliminary Report on Yosemite and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove in 1865. Olmsted, the democratic park maker, believed that parks were opportunities to weave together parcels of green space, healthful places where people could rest and participate in recreational activities. Olmsted's idea was to create parks that connected communities within a given city and to create them, as well, to link the entire country in one green corridor.

LeConte Memorial Lodge, situated in Yosemite National Park, the first land set aside anywhere for a national park for the people, will take Olmsted's idea and circle the Earth with green words that will grow awareness, caring, and creative thoughts about landscapes everywhere--about the world we inhabit.

Our course will follow John Muir's travels around the world beginning in Yosemite National Park at the front door of LeConte Memorial Lodge.
