Mississippi Nukes Thursday, October 12, 2006
Port Gibson, Mississippi is home to one of the first post-Three Mile Island nuclear plants to apply for a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission - the so-called "Grand Gulf" nuclear plant. We call it "Grand Goof." A coalition of companies called NuStart has received a federal subsidy of $260 million, as part of the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Power 2010 program, just to cover the cost of applying for a construction and operating license at the Grand Gulf site. (This is the entire annual budget for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory).
Today we filed a claim with the Atomic Safety Licensing Board (a sub-unit of NRC) demanding that they take a hard look at the risks from a possible terrorist attack on this facility when they evaluate its environmental impacts. The NRC has, until recently, refused to look at terrorism risks, calling them "speculative." That was until the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling in another one of our cases (teaming up with the organization Mothers for Peace) taking the NRC to task for refusing to look at terrorism risks. We are asking that NRC do the right thing and look at the possible terrorism risks associated with the Grand Gulf plant.
You don't have to be a CIA agent to know that nuclear power plants are natural targets. People have a right to know the potential dangers they face in their own neighborhoods. That’s not only common sense; it happens to be the law.

I believe that prior to adopting any position on nuclear power, which is being pushed by politicians and industry and even approved by some environmentalists, everyone should read the extraordinary book by Helen Caldicott - "Nuclear Power Is Not The Answer". Just when I thought I could no longer be shocked by corruption I found this book. According to the book, nuclear power provides no net energy, its processing requires the emission of a great deal of CO2, operation of the power plants contribute extreme amounts of greenhouse gases, it pollutes the earth with the most toxic forms of radiation. The book gives background information on Three Mile Island and Chernobyl that demonstrates that accidents could result in contamination that genetically damage everything around for generations and result in radiation that lasts for centuries and render the land unusable for up to 4.5 billion years.
In addition, this book provides information about the Bush/Cheney Energy Policy. The Policy provides for millions of tax payer dollars in subsidies to allow proposed nuclear power plant owners to shift the cost of their nuclear research and development from the company to us, it allows the construction and operation of nuclear power plants without requiring safeguards or warranties from the owners, it guarantees the owners profit margins that they anticipate they will achieve and it relieves the owners from liability for their actions, just to mention a few things. It reveals the true nature of the NRC as a tool of industry. Finally, it alerted me to the silent repeal of the Utilities Holding Company Act. Please everyone read this book. In addition, “The Weather Makers” by Dr. Tim Flannery is a superb book on Global Warming and offers many new ideas regarding what we might be able to do regarding power needs.
