Thomas Y. Au
Thomas Au is currently conservation chair of the Pennsylvania chapter and of the Governor Pinchot Group. He is also co-chair of the chapter’s water issues committee. He has been a member of the Sierra Club for over 30 years. He's been absolutely central to the PA chapter's legislative and legal strategy over the years, and is a major voice in the state for getting the fracking boom under control. Tom works something akin to full time hours on these issues (or it certainly seems that way, given his results!).
Hiking, biking, and skiing has led to his appreciation of our natural resources and the need to protect wilderness.
Tom served as an attorney in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for 28 years before retiring in 2004 and beginning volunteer work for the Sierra Club. Tom has been practicing environmental law for his whole career, working on controlling air pollution, water pollution, mining operations, and nuclear safety. He is a strong believer that citizen voices can make a difference in shaping environmental policy.
He has worked to help chapter leaders review and change legislation, lobby environmental agencies, and take strong positions on significant environmental issues.  He has worked with other citizen groups, including the Clean Air Board of Central Pennsylvania - where he is currently president - to strengthen their voice before state and local agencies.Â
