Weighing in with the WTO

Case Updates:

May 1, 2003

The Club intervened as amicus curiae in a trade dispute between the United States and Canada before the World Trade Organization, to oppose Canadian timber subsidies that encourage unsustainable logging practices in old-growth forests. Canadian timber subsidies have led to the destruction of many virgin forests throughout Canada. Sierra Club amicus participation in this proceeding before the WTO provides an opportunity to underscore the environmentally destructive nature of the subsidies. The Club joined Sierra Club Canada, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Defenders of Wildlife, the Northwest Ecosystem Alliance, and the Dogwood Initiative in this effort.
