Saving Turkey Creek

One of the Club’s biggest surprise victories came on December 24, 2003 in Turkey Creek, an historic flood-prone African-American community in Gulfport, Mississippi. Developer Butch Ward, the nemesis of environmental justice for Turkey Creek and the proponent of a proposed development which would have filled hundreds of acres of wetlands, withdrew his permit application from the Army Corp of Engineers. Activists had been expecting the Corp to issue the Section 404 permit and the Sierra Club’s Environmental Justice program was poised to challenge the permit. Now it looks like that won’t be necessary. "Now the North Gulfport community believes there truly is a Santa Claus," said Rose Johnson, chair of the Mississippi Chapter of the Sierra Club. "There couldn't be a better Christmas present than to save our wetlands and save our community from flooding."
