When Highways and Wildlands Intersect: Utah and Iowa

The Club recently won a huge victory for Utah’s roadless areas. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in July that vehicle “two tracks” and abandoned prospecting trails are not “roads” that lessen the wilderness status and protected status of remote areas in Utah’s backcountry.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the state Department of Transportation recently issued a permit to construct an 8-mile highway that would impact the Rock Island Preserve. The Club has moved to defend the Preserve, and is urging officials to choose a less damaging route.
