Protecting Wisconsin's North Woods

In mid-October 2003, the Club filed a legal challenge to two logging projects in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northeast Wisconsin. The forest covers over a half million and a half acres, and offers extraordinary landscape diversity, including towering pine and hardwood forests interspersed with hundreds of crystal clear lakes, streams and glacial bogs. The forest is home to several rare, threatened and endangered species, but unfortunately is the poster child for ecologically and economically unsustainable logging. The challenged projects would log 13,100 acres in the heart of Canada lynx, Northern goshawk, and pine marten habitat, for a total of 50 million board feet of timber. Over 3,000 of these acres would be clear-cut.
