Stopping Secret Giveaways to Wisconsin Electric Power Company

Case Updates:

October 1, 2003

Air pollution from coal-fired power plants causes serious public health problems and contributes to widespread environmental damage, including the die-off of fish and forests from acid rain. In Wisconsin and Michigan, a half-dozen antiquated power plants operated by Wisconsin Electric Power Company spew thousands of tons of pollutants into the air from Milwaukee to Lake Superior. Sierra Club recently moved to block a backroom deal between the Bush Administration and the power company over multiple Clean Air Act violations at the company’s coal plants. Notably, the backroom deal would allow Wisconsin Electric to avoid modernizing two plants located in Milwaukee and on the banks of Lake Superior. The Sierra Club has moved to intervene in the case to help protect the people of Milwaukee and the wilderness of Lake Superior from further destruction.
