Working to Stop Backroom Deals with Big Agriculture

Case Updates:

March 5, 2004

In recent years, giant feedlots have come under attack for polluting America’s air and water. These animal factories confine tens of thousands of animals for their entire lives and produce staggering quantities of animal waste. Each year, mega-feedlots spew enormous quantities of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and fine dust particles into the air. Facing mounting pressure, representatives of Big Agriculture reached out to the Bush Administration for relief, and in June 2002, a lobbying firm representing the industry proposed an agreement that would provide immunity for Clean Air Act violations. Now Sierra Club has filed suit to obtain information about this closed-door deal under the Freedom of Information Act.
