Saving wetlands and wildlife from Utah's Legacy Highway

Case Updates:

May 1, 2003

The Sierra Club is so effective because it uses many tools to solve a problem. When Utah’s highway department championed the “Legacy Highway,” a road that threatened wetlands along the Great Salt Lake used by migratory birds, as well as the integrity of communities along its route, the Sierra Club responded with a full-court press of organizing, media and lobbying work, and, finally, a lawsuit. Our high-profile suit helped galvanize community opposition to the highway, and we scored a terrific legal victory to boot: a federal appeals court sent the project back to the drawing board in September 2002. The local Club chapter is currently working vigorously to ensure that another boondoggle project doesn’t rise from the ashes.
