Challenging Secret Drilling Plans in the Arctic Nat’l Wildlife Refuge

Complementing the Sierra Club’s suit seeking records of the Cheney Energy Task Force, the Sierra Club launched another legal challenge to the Bush administration’s culture of secrecy surrounding its energy development ambitions. This lawsuit challenges the refusal by the Department of the Interior to release documents sought in two Freedom of Information Act requests concerning plans to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and documents relating to wildlife surveys done in the area. This lawsuit advances the Club’s work in safeguarding the Refuge for future generations and highlighting the administration’s active efforts to hide its “dig, drill, and destroy” policies from the public eye.
