Coalition Fighting to Protect Alaska’s Northern Slope
Case Updates:
April 1, 2004
Sierra Club joined a coalition of seven national environmental groups to sue the federal government for its decision to open a large area of Alaska’s Northern Slope to oil and gas exploration. The area in question, known as the northwest section of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is home to a variety of migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife. The lawsuit argues that the Bush administration failed to adequately consider alternative proposals for development that would have safeguarded habitat while allowing oil and gas exploration. In its plan to open the Northern Slope, the Bush administration ignored the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws.
