WV Coal Plant to Have Strict Pollution Controls Thanks to Settlement

Case Updates:

August 1, 2004

A new Sierra Club settlement with Longview Power in West Virginia will mean stricter pollution controls for a proposed plant just north of Morgantown. The pollution control plan comes in the wake of an administrative challenge over the permit for a new 600-megawatt coal-fired plant that threatened air quality in nearby Dolly Sods, Otter Creek and James River Wilderness areas, and Shenandoah National Park. In response to our challenge, Longview has agreed to reduce polluting emissions, provide funding to deal with acid rain, and establish an ongoing system to monitor mercury emissions. The settlement results in the strictest permit in the nation for a coal-fired power plant.
