Stopping Seismic Exploration at Stone Cabin in Utah

The Stone Cabin project is the latest in a series of oil and gas exploration projects that strikes at the heart of America’s Redrock Wilderness Act. The project is emblematic of the Bush administration’s unending desire to drill and develop public lands. The administration-approved project will involve intensive off-road exploration, including seismic testing (or so-called “thumper trucks”) throughout the wilderness. However, the area contains one of the densest concentrations of rock art in the country and is seen as a key piece of the nation’s wilderness inventory. These two characteristics of this “outdoor museum” mean that gas exploration is a particularly bad idea, risking destruction of the entire region’s treasured qualities. Sierra Club has now filed suit to force the administration to evaluate the impacts to wilderness and cultural resources before permitting any exploration or drilling.
