Demanding Adequate Regulation of Radioactive Wastes
Case Updates:
August 1, 2004
This past January, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission jointly adopted new regulations that exempt various categories of radioactive waste from regulation during transport. Under the new regulations, large quantities of “low-level” radioactive waste would be transported by truck, rail, and planes throughout the United States with no environmental controls, potentially exposing workers and the public to dangerous releases of radiation. These regulations appear to be part of an overall effort by the Bush administration to rewrite nuclear laws and pave the way for a new wave of environmentally destructive nuclear power plants. Sierra Club recently moved to file suit against these two regulating agencies to protect communities nationwide.
