DuPont Air Pollution in Mississippi

DuPont’s DeLisle plant in Mississippi discharges close to 14 million pounds of toxic chemicals per year, including about 42% of all dioxins released in the entire United States. Many of these toxins cause cancer, birth defects, weakened immune systems, and eye, skin, and lung irritation. Nonetheless, DuPont filed for new permits to expand this facility and raise the pollution limit without taking any measures to stop polluting. The proposed expansion would spew even more pollution into a low income, minority community that already suffers from health problems attributable to high pollution. In August, Sierra Club filed a lawsuit against the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for its decision to grant the permits. If successful, DuPont will be forced to install the proper pollution controls for its expanded operations and to pay for its past pollution violations which total upwards of $13.6 million under state law.
