Solano County Reigns in Toxic Animal Factories

Case Updates:

May 24, 2005

Large-scale animal factories are often devastating for local communities and the environment, resulting in widespread ground water contamination and horrible odors that plague nearby residents and threaten public health. However, with proper planning and location restrictions, the negative impacts of these factories can be dramatically reduced. Recently, after a long struggle involving legal complaints, local organizing, and political strategies, Sierra Club’s Mother Lode and Redwood Chapters won a huge victory when local Solano County officials decided to reign in polluting mega dairies and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the area. The new county ordinance places restrictions on locating mega farms near populated areas and public spaces, and imposes minimum technology standards to help reduce environmental problems. Local activists are thrilled about the new measures which help protect their communities.
