North 49 Logging Plans in Sierra Nevada Halted; Administration Must Allow Public Input

The Lassen National Forest is home to an abundance of wildlife, sapphire lakes, and the world’s largest plug dome volcano. It is also host to the North 49, an egregious logging project that would destroy old-growth forest habitat and devastate wildlife and birds that depend on the ancient forest ecosystem. In early July, a judge temporarily stopped the logging because the administration had unlawfully denied citizen input on the project. Now the administration must reopen its decision-making process and listen to genuine concerns about the environmental impacts, including long-term, cumulative problems associated with the ramping up of logging in the Sierra Nevada. The case is part of a larger, strategic challenge to Bush administration’s decision to weaken the Sierra Nevada “Framework,” a management plan that was originally designed to encourage forest ecological values but was later revised by the Bush administration to allow a tripling of logging.
