Compromise Reached On Timber Sale in Maine's White Mountain National Forest

Although Maine is teeming with wilderness and natural treasures, including over 10 million acres of forestlands known as the Maine Woods, its wilderness heritage has increasingly come under attack by commercial logging and development. After learning about a proposed timber sale in the Bog Brook region of the White Mountain National Forest, the Maine Chapter sprang into action and filed an appeal. Following an on-the-ground visit, the Chapter was able to work with local Forest Service officials to come up with alternatives and solutions that would help maintain the wilderness qualities in the forest. On January 27, both sides were able to formally announce a winning compromise that will reduce the amount of clear-cutting in the project. The victory will go a long way to helping protect the area, including the adjacent Caribou I roadless area.
