Clean Water and Factory Farms
Larry Sansom

Larry SansomAfter graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Agricultural Economics, Larry Sansom worked in feed sales. Today, he owns and operates his own farm where he raises Angus cattle. Ironically, although he was once in the feed business, he raises his cattle without any commercial feed. Instead they eat only grass. The cattle are fed on a rotational paddock schedule, where they eat a fresh variety of grass every week. Sansom chose the variety of grasses after researching the nutritional content of each.

Larry grew up on a farm and has been a farmer for over 20 years. He has always had problems with the use of implants, antibiotics and hormones in cattle. Then he began seeing news stories about alternatives. Because he and his family eat the animals he raises, his concerns over the quality of meat he produces had a personal dimension. In order to protect his own health and his family's health, he realized he wanted to feed his cattle naturally. Sansom’s grass-fed cattle have been a success. He said, "I've run out of cattle every year." He sells whole and half sides of beef during the fall and hamburger year round. His hamburger is USDA inspected.

As for other environmental practices, Sansom tries to run his farm in a way that protects the surrounding area, particularly nearby waters. He complies with all water quality regulations, participates in Kentucky’s Water Watch Program, and is a member of the Sierra Club. Sansom is also involved in several farming organizations. One of the many organizations he is active in is R-CALF, a national non-profit cattle organization which led the fight to pass mandatory country of origin labeling that reserves the USA label for only cattle born, raised, and slaughtered in the U.S.
