REGIONAL ACTIVITIES IN MASSACHUSETTS

Take a deep breath. What do you smell? How do your lungs feel? If you’re in Massachusetts inhaling you might not feel too good. According to the Centers for Disease Control Massachusetts has the highest adult asthma rate in the nation. We also have some of the worst traffic congestion in the country. Meanwhile, the number of people taking public transportation is actually decreasingwhile gas prices stay high. Correlation? We certainly think so.

The Sierra Club is working to improve air quality and reduce our reliance on foreign oil through smart choices.

Better Public Transportation
Why spend more for less? The MBTA plans to build a bus tunnel through several Boston neighborhoods at a cost of $1 billion – instead of saving hundreds of millions by using an existing-but-unused rail tunnel. If it sounds backward that’s because it is. Just the facts.

Hail That Taxi
Boston and surrounding communities cabs are almost all Ford Crown Victoria’s, but not just any ‘Crown Vics.’ These are actually former State Police cars that have larger engines that get even worse mileage than standard issue ones. The Sierra Club is working with the City of Boston to introduce fuel efficient hybrid vehicles to the fleets in an effort to increase take-home pay for cab drivers, reduce emissions that pollute our air, and reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Take a clean air ride.

Strong America, Strong Communities, Fuel-Efficient Fleets
Fuel efficiency – with higher gas prices it has become all the rage for car buyers. It can and is also saving municipalities lots of money – but there’s more cities that haven’t seen the savings yet. We’re working with communities across the state to get them to sign the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement to reduce global warming pollution. Strength in the numbers.

Fuel Efficiency is Patriotic
Sensing a theme yet? Sound like the kind of thing you could wear on your sleeve, or maybe on your hybrid car? Then take a look at these bumper stickers that are literally sweeping the nation. In a few short weeks we’ve had requests for these stickers in 39 states and one US Territory! If you want to show your pride AND concern, order one of these free bumper stickers today. Our energy is our strength.
