environmental education

Teaching young people to think about the environment is as important as teaching them to read and write. Environmental education gives children the skills to live as active and informed citizens. Industry-backed groups are fighting environmental education programs in our schools through school boards, textbook censorship, the Department of Education, and through state-level legislation. Of the four states in the Southern Plains region, only Arkansas has a functioning comprehensive state-level education program.

Anti-Environmental Education Legislation
Critics of environmental education include corporate pollutors who are threatened by environmental regulations and standards. Policy institutes and private foundations argue that environmental education is biased, with the intention of scaring children and turning them into radicial activists. Check the Sierra Club national site for articles and Environmental Education Committee news to learn more.
