global warming

Global warming occurs when increased amounts of man-made gases (greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere absorb the sun's rays, slowly increasing global temperatures. We have increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary global warming gas, in our atmosphere by 30 percent in the past 100 years. Some regions of the world have already warmed by as much as 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

The world's leading scientists project that during our children's lifetimes, global warming will raise the average temperature of the planet by 2.7 to 11 degrees Fahrenheit. How much difference can this make? A lot. Extreme weather events have become more common. Plants and animals around the world are shifting their ranges in an effort to escape a changing climate. By burning ever-increasing quantities of coal, oil and gas, we are choking our planet in a cloud of this pollution. If we donšt begin to act now to curb global warming, our children will live in a world where the climate will be far less hospitable than it is today.

Texas is number one in the nation in the production of global warming emissions.

Clean Car Campaign
Increasing the fuel efficiency of automobiles is the biggest single step the United States can take to reduce consumption of fossil fuels and the threat of global warming. Over 40 percent of the oil we use in this country goes into our cars and trucks. Getting more miles out of a gallon of gas means lessening our dangerous reliance on oil, lowering levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution, reducing pressure to drill in sensitive environments, enhancing national security, and saving consumers money at the gas pumps.
