The Board of Directors of the Sierra Club recognizes that
to achieve our mission of environmental protection and a sustainable
future for the planet, we must attain social justice and human
rights at home and around the globe. The Board calls on all
parts of the Club to discuss and explore the linkages between
environmental quality and social justice, and to promote dialogue,
increased understanding and appropriate action.

Environmental Justice (EJ)
The Sierra Club's Environmental Justice program works in partnership
with local communities to ensure that all people can live in a clean,
healthful environment, free from pollution. Those responsible for
potentially harmful activity, rather than its potential victimes,
should bear the burden of proof as to its safety. Read the Sierra
Club Environmental
Justice principles at the national site.

EJ Grants
The Sierra Club provides seed grants of up to $5000 "to assist
in grassroots organizing projects directly linking Sierra Club volunteer
activists with economically disadvantaged and/or communities of
color facing environmental injustice." The goals of these grants
include both strengthening ties between the Sierra Club and community
activists and providing these communities with the skills to tackle
issues that affect them.

EJ Organizing Principles
The Sierra Club provides a list of principles to govern the relationship
between the Club and the communities which it assists. They include
providing grassroots organizing assitance to communities at their
request, for their issues, and always with the goal of laying the
foundations for community self-reliance. Read
the principles at the Sierra Club national site.
