Oil Price Emphasis – Home
To the Editor:
With oil [at/having hit/nearing] a $100-a-barrel milestone, gas prices steadily
increasing, and home heating oil prices skyrocketing as winter approaches,
energy costs will strain consumers’ wallets this season. This Thanksgiving
Congress needs to give us an energy bill we can all be thankful for. The
House and the Senate passed their own energy bills this summer, and a combination
of the best parts of each bill would represent serious forward progress toward
clean, smart energy. The Renewable Electricity Standard passed by the House
represents an achievable compromise that would require 15 percent of our
electricity to come from renewable sources like wind, solar, and biomass
by the year 2020. It will save consumers up to $18 billion on their energy
bills by 2020. The final energy bill should include the Renewable Electricity
Standard and the increase in fuel economy to standards of 35 miles per gallon
from the Senate bill. All the pieces are there, now Congress just needs to
flip the switch on America's new energy future before it heads home for the
year.
Gas Price Emphasis – CAFE
To the Editor:
With oil [at/having hit/nearing] a $100-a-barrel milestone and gas prices
steadily increasing, this Thanksgiving Congress needs to give us an energy
bill we can all be thankful for. The House and the Senate passed their own
energy bills this summer, and a combination of the best parts of each bill
would represent serious forward progress toward clean, smart energy. The
Senate bill’s increase in fuel economy to standards of 35 miles per
gallon would save consumers nearly $25 billion at the pump in 2020, according
to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The fuel economy increase would also
save 1.2 billions of oil each day, contributing to the America’s energy
independence. The final energy bill should include the Senate’s fuel
economy standard and the Renewable Electricity Standard passed by the House,
which represents an achievable compromise that would require 15 percent of
our electricity to come from renewable sources like wind, solar, and biomass
by the year 2020. All the pieces are there, now Congress just needs to flip

Consumer Savings
To the Editor:
Oil is [at/has hit/nearing] $100 a barrel – a milestone previously
thought impossible – and gas prices are climbing over $3 again. Now's
the time for Congress to give us an energy bill we can all be thankful for.
Between an increase in fuel economy from the Senate and the requirement for
more renewable energy passed by the House, Congress has all the pieces ready
to bring us a new clean energy future. If Congress flips the switch on our
new energy future by passing a bill including both those things, they can
save hard-working Americans billions of dollars. The Union of Concerned Scientists
estimates that the fuel economy provision would save us $25 billion at the
pump and that using more renewable energy will save us up to $18 billion
on our energy bills at home by the year 2020. All the pieces are there, now
Congress just needs to flip the switch on America's new energy future before
it heads home for the year.
Jobs Creation
To the Editor:
America will get a great economic gift this season if Congress gives us
an energy bill we can all be thankful for before it heads home for the holidays.
The House and the Senate passed their own energy bills this summer, and a
combination of the best parts of each bill will help grow the economy and
create tens of thousands of new jobs. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates
that the increase in fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon passed
by the Senate will create more than 170,000 American jobs, with more than
22,000 jobs in the auto industry. This will not only help Detroit and the
economy as a whole, but it will help consumers by saving us $25 billion at
the pump, according to UCS estimates. The House passed a requirement that
we get 15 percent of our electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar,
and biomass by 2020. UCS estimates that this too will create tens of thousands
of good-paying jobs in fields like wind energy and solar manufacturing and
installation, not to mention that it will save us up to $18 billions on our
home energy bills. All the pieces are there, Congress just needs to flip
the new switch on a cleaner, stronger economy and a brighter energy future
by passing a final bill with these two important provisions.
