Water Quality

Southwest Florida’s water quality has been degraded for decades by polluted discharges from Lake Okeechobee. REAL Everglades Restoration and water quality are inextricably linked. Stopping or greatly reducing these harmful, polluted fresh water discharges from Lake Okeechobee would provide huge improvements in water quality to east coast, west coast and Everglades rivers and estuaries but especially in the Caloosahatchee River Basin and adjacent waterways. The Caloosahatchee River basin receives 75% of the discharges annually, resulting in severe degradation of water quality and causing great distress to our eco-systems. There are many things that can be done local to the basin and in other areas of Southwest Florida. Lee County has one of the best fertilizer ordinances in the state. Other counties should follow suit. Funding point pollution control and local water quality projects are crucial to improving local water quality. Public awareness and education are effective tools in the pursuit of clean water. Clean water, drinking or otherwise, are a human right and should be treated as such.
