DECEMBER: ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE, AND ENERGY JUSTICE

Location:  Online (RSVP here)

Time: Tuesday, December 13th, 2022: 7pm-9pm

Featured Speaker: Justin Brightharp (advocate), and Neil Sardana (senior Beyond Coal organizer)

Whether motivated by the climate crisis or high gas prices, many are turning to electric vehicles (EVs). The federal government is funding the buildout of some of the infrastructure that would make more widespread adoption of EV use possible.

But with electric utilities still burning coal and gas, the social and environmental costs of battery production, high electricity bills, and car-centric sprawl continuing apace, what can we do to avoid merely electrifying the pitfalls of the status quo?

Come to our Nov. 15 meeting to learn about electric vehicle infrastructure and discuss how we can push for energy justice, including in our transportation system.

We’ll hear from Justin Brightharp, an advocate who is highly informed on EV policy, on how federal funds for EVs (such as from the Inflation Reduction Act) are being distributed and used. We will also learn from Neil Sardana, senior organizer with Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, about the current Georgia Power rate case and opportunities to take action for energy justice in the short and longer term.

We'll also discuss other ways to take action and upcoming events and opportunities.

*Transportation and access note for events at the Sierra Club Georgia Chapter office: At the Avondale MARTA station area, a new stairway has been built and the south bridge is now open! There is no elevator to the street at the south exit, unfortunately.

To walk to the office, exit the Avondale MARTA station on the south side. Take the stairs down to the street, then make a left onto E. College Ave. Continue through the Sams Street intersection, where you'll find La Calavera Bakery; the office is in the building behind the bakery.

It's time again for Sierra Club Metro Atlanta Group's most popular program of the year: the state legislative rundown from Sierra Club legislative experts Neill Herring and Mark Woodall. Find out what our state senators and representatives are up to at the Gold Dome this year and what you can do about it to protect our environment!

Every three years, major utility Georgia Power updates its long-range plan for how it will deliver electricity to users. In 2019 it's time again for one of these updates, making this a pivotal year for energy in Georgia. What will we make of this opportunity? Now that Georgia Power has released its draft plan, Sierra Club is kicking our campaign into high gear to make sure we win as much clean energy as possible in our state.
