The Sierra Club's Great Lakes Program
July 20, 2007
Urgent! Act now to help Lake Michigan: sign and return a petition to stop BP from dumping toxic pollution into the lake. Find out more.
The Sierra Club's Great Lakes Ecoregion Program works to turn back specific threats to the region. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, the Program has coordinated efforts for more than 20 years to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem from air, water and land pollution.
The Great Lakes and their surrounding waterways are home to over 37 million people and an abundance of plants and animals unique to the region. The Great Lakes contribute to the history of the surrounding area and continue to support the region's agriculture, industrial manufacturing, steel production, shipping, commercial and sport fisheries, recreation and tourism.
Sadly, Bush Administration policies threaten the Great Lakes. Hundreds of beach closings occur every summer from pollution. The survival of native wildlife is threatened by development and invasive species, and proposals to sell Great Lakes water to the highest bidder could mean problems for one of our most precious natural resources.
