Gulf Coast Water and Sediment Testing
Oil sludge in residential home. On September 30 and October 2, 2005, amid concern that government officials were playing down health risks in some of the flooded areas after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, local residents took matters into their own hands by enlisting the help of private organizations to evaluate whether the hurricanes' storm surges spread toxic contaminants in the surrounding area. Working with the Sierra Club, environmental consultant and chemist Wilma Subra conducted testing in residential neighborhoods, schools, and areas around the DuPont DeLisle chemical plant. Soil and water samples were taken in 33 locations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
