Ken Saro-Wiwa Memorial March
Pictures from the March
The Sierra Club joined human rights, other environmental activists, several dozen other Nigerian democracy advocates in front of Shell Oil's Washington, DC, headquarters to remember Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his fellow MOSOP leaders on the four year anniversary of their executions at the hands of Nigeria's brutal military dictatorship of Sani Abacha. At the memorial
service, charges of complicity in human rights abuses and environmental devestation were pronounced against Shell, which supported and funded the Abacha regime.
About 75 activists joined in the rally, which included a five-block
march to the World Bankheadquarters to protest the Bank's plans to help finance a new oil pipeline project in Nigeria's neighboring countries Chad and Cameroon. The event was solemn in reflection on the tragic loss of life and freedoms in the region, but the message to the World
Bank was clear: DON'T CREATE ANOTHER NIGER DELTA NIGHTMARE IN CHAD AND CAMEROON.
