Mining

Mining
Tailings from the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company mines have polluted the Bhadra River, choking the riverbed and degrading the water quality. These highly controversial mines, in the heart of Kudremukh National Park, remain one of the biggest mining disasters in the Western Ghats. Iron ore is found in the central and northern Western Ghats, and mining for iron ore — as well as granite, bauxite, manganese, and other minerals — poses a significant threat to many other pristine habitats in the Western Ghats.
