This medallion, produced in both bronze and silver colors, was produced to recognize the Centennial of the U.S. National Parks in 1972. The obverse side includes a bas-relief of Muir with a legend that reads, "National Parks Centennial, 1872 - 1972, John Muir." The reverse side includes an image of Half Dome (Tissiack) in Yosemite National Park, with a legend that reads, "Yosemite National Park, 1890."
