- Raymond
was instrumental in the campaign for government protection of Yosemite
Valley and the Mariposa Grove in 1864, when they were given to the
state of California. Raymond argued these land should be "for public
use, resort, and recreation and are inalienable forever." To
underscore the argument for preservation of natural beauty, he noted
that "the summits are mostly bare Granite Rock" and so had little
commercial value.
