Restore UNFPA Funding Amendment
Our Position: support
Bill Number: H.AMDT.293 to HR2862
Sponsor: Carolyn Maloney (D-NY)
Legislative Session: 2005
The Maloney amendment was designed to ensure that U.S. funding would be restored to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Despite the life-saving and important environmental work that UNFPA accomplishes, partisan politics, misinformation, anti-family planning members of Congress and President Bush have blocked US contributions since 2001.
UNFPA works in over 140 countries to ensure that women have access to voluntary family planning, economic opportunities, and education -- all of which contribute to increased opportunities for women to choose the size and spacing of their families. Enabling access to voluntary, safe and affordable family planning services and empowering women and girls helps to slow population growth, ultimately securing a more stable future for families throughout the world.
Status
By a vote of 192-233, the House rejected the Maloney amendment to the fiscal year 2006 Science-State-Justice-Commerce appropriations bill on June 16, 2005.
