Forests:
National Forest Protection and Restoration Act
Our Position: support
Bill Number: HR3420
Sponsor: Jim Leach (R-IA) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY)
Legislative Session: 2006
The National Forest Protection and Restoration Act (NFPRA) will help preserve America's natural heritage and save taxpayers money. National Forests filter pollution out of water, protect us from flooding, and provide wildlife habitat, and should be protected and passed on to our children, not squandered for short-term profit.
By putting our National Forests off-limits to commercial logging, NFPRA will save billions of dollars on a wasteful program that lost more than $2 billion between 1992-1997. The bill would redirect the money to restore forests and help diversify the economies of communities that receive revenues from federal logging activities. It would free up funds now wasted on commercial logging and dedicate them to true restoration and community protection from fire.
Status
10/12/05: Referred to House subcommittee.
