Wildlands & Wildlife:
Mount Hood Stewardship Legacy Act
Our Position: support, with concerns
Bill Number: HR5025
Sponsor: Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR). Rep. Walden (R-OR)
Legislative Session: 2006
This bill seeks to protect 77,216 acres of Wilderness on the Mount Hood National Forest. There remain key concerns over the width of a proposed utility corridor. In addition, the bill establishes the nation's first wilderness mountain biking zone. There is also a forest stewardship section that allows for logging in areas outside the Wilderness designation previously cut but prohibits the taking of stands more than 120 years old.
Sens. Wyden and Smith introduced a similar bill, The Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Act, (S3854) on September 6, 2006 which includes a substantial amount of additional acreage for protection.
Status
Passed the House in July 2006.
