5 Sprawl & Transportation:
Washington County Growth and Conservation Act

Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: S3636
Sponsor: Senator Bennett (R-UT)
Legislative Session: 2006

While this bill includes a provision to designate over 200,000 acres as wilderness – the majority (86%) of which are already protected within Zion National Park.  Outside of the Park the bill fails to protect over 70% of wilderness quality lands in the Zion-Mojave region.  The bill sells off more than 40 square miles of public open space for potential development, and gives away more public lands to the county.  Further, the bill diverts tax payer dollars for sprawl-inducing water developments, off-road vehicle trails, roads, and utility corridors, fueling faster growth in the St George, Utah area and increasing the demands on the Zion-Mojave wilderness.  This bill is identical to HR 5769.

Status

Jul 11, 2006: This bill was introduced, then read twice and referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
