5 Wildlands & Wildlife:
White Pine County Conservation, Recreation and Development Act

Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: S3772
Sponsor: Senators Ensign (R-NV) and Reid (D-NV)
Legislative Session: 2006

This omnibus public lands bill includes a provision to designate 545,000 acres as Wilderness in eastern Nevada.  Key concerns include important areas that have been left out of the bill, release, water, and utility right of ways.

The Sierra Club does not support this bill as written, and has come up with the following list of suggestions as to provisions that should be included in the bill:

1)  Provide money for a follow-up water study in WP County

2)  Issues with the language and size of "cost effective" Tahoe biomass project

3)  Limit the acres for sale annually in WP County

4)  Remove authorzation for the wastewater SNWA pipeline to Lake Mead

5)  Money for the sale of public lands should only be used for public

Status

This bill was introduced on August 1, 2006.  A hearing on this bill with the Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests has been scheduled for Nov 16, 2006 at 2:30 p.m.
