Wildlands & Wildlife:
Owyhee Initiative Implementation Act
Our Position: support, with concerns
Bill Number: S3794
Sponsor: Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID)
Legislative Session: 2006
This omnibus public lands bill includes a provision to designate 517,000 acres in Idaho’s Owyhee-Bruneau Canyonlands as wilderness and provide wild and scenic designation to 386 miles of river. The bill will also implement within three years a travel management plan for the county that will restrict travel to designated routes, close 200 miles of motorized trails in Wilderness areas and provide enforcement support. Key concerns remain: There needs to be a fair market appraisal completed for any lands or interests offered by land owners for purchase or exchange with the Bureau of Land Management and the chapter will continue to seek Wild and Scenic River designations consistent with the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (right now there is “special language.”)
Status
Sep 27, 2006: This bill was sent to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Hearings were held.
