Sprawl & Transportation:
Reduce Funding for Transit and Environmental Funding
Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: S.AMDT.646 to HR3
Sponsor: Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Legislative Session: 2005
This amendment, offered by Senator Sessions, would cut $11 billion from critical transportation, environmental, community development, and public health programs in the transportation bill.
Before this came to the floor, the Senate had voted to increase the overall price tag of the transportation bill for various programs by $11 billion. However, President Bush has stated that he would reject any bill of that magnitude, which prompted Senator Sessions to seek a reduction in the total cost. Unfortunately, his target was not the source of the added $11 billion; instead, he chose to target funding for transit, bike and pedestrian programs, transportation enhancements, congestion mitigation and air quality, and other important environmental programs. These are fundamental programs that communities rely upon and which reduce the pollution from our transportation systems.
Status
The amendment failed with a vote of 16-84 on May 17, 2005.
