Called by Clark "the wild cat of the North," the
elusive lynx frequents deep forests, often staying out of
sight. Even the explorers only saw a pelt rather than the
animal itself. Its large furry paws help the lynx hunt snowshoe
hares even in the deepest snow. Listed as a threatened species
in 2000, the lynx has lost large tracts of habitat to logging
and snowmobile use.
